Why Functional Lab Testing Matters

When you’re not feeling well — but standard lab tests say “everything looks normal” — it can be frustrating, confusing, and discouraging.

The truth is this:

Most chronic symptoms are driven by imbalances that traditional labs do not measure. Functional Lab Testing goes beyond diagnosing disease and identifies early dysfunction long before conventional markers change.

At Denver Sports & Holistic Medicine, we use Advanced Functional Lab Testing to uncover what’s actually happening inside your body so we can address the true cause of your symptoms — not just mask them.

Functional testing provides a comprehensive view of your:

• Biochemistry
• Hormones & stress patterns
• Gut health & microbiome
• Detoxification pathways
• Inflammation & immune activity
• Mitochondrial energy production
• Nutrient status
• Environmental toxin exposure

This depth of analysis allows us to identify contributors to:

• Fatigue, brain fog, and sleep disturbances
• Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or reflux
• Hormonal imbalance and menstrual irregularities
• Weight loss resistance and metabolic instability
• Skin conditions and inflammatory symptoms
• Autoimmune tendencies and chronic immune activation
• Chronic pain, headaches, and neurological symptoms
• Mold toxicity, Lyme patterns, and chronic infections
• Anxiety, irritability, and mood changes
• Impaired detoxification and toxin burden
• Food sensitivities and nutrient deficiencies
• Mitochondrial dysfunction

If you’ve been told “your labs look normal,” but you still feel unwell, functional testing reveals what that statement missed.
This is the difference between guessing… and healing with clarity.

Functional labs allow us to understand why you feel the way you do — and precisely what your body needs to heal.

Common Advanced Labs We Use

DUTCH Hormone & Adrenal Testing

Evaluates cortisol rhythms, sex hormones and metabolites, melatonin, oxidative stress, and detox pathways.

Organic Acids Testing (OAT)

Assesses mitochondrial function, mold markers, nutrient status, neurotransmitters, detox pathways, and microbial metabolites.

Comprehensive Stool & Gut Microbiome Analysis

Evaluates digestion, inflammation, dysbiosis, parasites, yeast, microbiome balance, and gut immunity.

Food Sensitivity Panels

IgG, IgA, complement-mediated reactions, delayed immune responses.

Micronutrient & Mineral Analysis

Intracellular nutrient levels, antioxidants, cofactors for detoxification, hormones, immunity, and ATP production.

Environmental Toxin & Mycotoxin Panels

Mold toxins, pesticides, VOCs, phthalates, parabens, BPA, heavy metals.

Lyme & Tick-Borne Coinfection Testing

Borrelia, Bartonella, Babesia, Ehrlichia, viral reactivation patterns.

Genetic & Epigenetic Testing (SNP Analysis)

Methylation, detox pathways, hormone metabolism, inflammatory SNPs.

Functional Blood Chemistry (Optimal Range Analysis)

We do not rely on disease-based reference ranges — we interpret bloodwork using functional optimal ranges to catch early imbalances.

How We Use These Results

1. Root-Cause Pattern Identification

We interpret your labs in the full context of your symptoms, health history, environment, nutrition, stress physiology, and lifestyle. Rather than searching for isolated abnormalities, we identify systems-based patterns that explain why symptoms developed and what is driving them now.

Common root-cause patterns include:

• Hormonal dysregulation
• Mitochondrial dysfunction and low cellular energy
• Gut–immune imbalance and dysbiosis
• Toxic burden and impaired detoxification
• Stealth infections
• Thyroid and adrenal dysfunction
• Blood sugar instability and metabolic resistance

This pattern-based approach reveals the upstream mechanisms behind chronic symptoms — allowing treatment to be precise, personalized, and effective.

2. Personalized Treatment Strategy

Your lab results translate into a stepwise, personalized treatment plan designed to correct the underlying dysfunctions driving your symptoms. Depending on your patterns, your strategy may include:

Acupuncture & nervous system regulation
Nutrition and metabolic correction
Detoxification & drainage support
Mitochondrial repair therapies
Hormone balance support
Sports medicine & corrective exercise

Each intervention is prioritized in the order your physiology needs — reducing overwhelm and ensuring sustainable progress.

3. Measuring Progress & Refining Your Plan

We monitor your healing through:

• Symptom trends
• Key biomarkers
• Energy, sleep, digestion, and cognitive function
• Hormonal and metabolic patterns
• Detoxification and inflammatory pathways

Your plan evolves as your biology changes, ensuring you receive targeted, timely support at every stage of recovery.

4. Integrating Results Into a Whole-Person Plan

Your functional lab findings become a clear, actionable roadmap — one that is:

• Holistic
• Root-cause focused
• Prioritized
• Sustainable

Rather than chasing symptoms, we address systems — enabling deep, lasting healing.

Who Benefits Most From Functional Lab Testing

Functional testing is especially helpful for individuals experiencing:

• Chronic fatigue and burnout
• Brain fog or cognitive changes
• Hormonal imbalance
• Digestive symptoms, IBS, SIBO
• Anxiety, irritability, mood shifts

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Functional Lab Testing?

Functional Lab Testing evaluates the physiological systems that regulate energy production, digestion, hormones, detoxification, inflammation, and immune health. Unlike standard labs that simply look for disease, functional testing identifies patterns of dysfunction long before disease develops. This allows us to build targeted, root-cause treatment plans based on your unique biochemistry.

What conditions can functional testing help identify?

Functional testing can uncover contributors to chronic fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, hormone imbalance, thyroid and adrenal dysfunction, food sensitivities, inflammation, nutrient depletion, metabolic instability, toxin exposure, heavy metals, mold illness, mitochondrial dysfunction, and chronic immune activation.

Do I need all of the tests?

No. Testing is customized. You only complete labs that will meaningfully change your treatment plan and improve clinical outcomes.

Are tests completed at home or in-office?

Most tests are completed at home using simple kits. Some require a local blood draw, and we help coordinate those logistics.

Does insurance cover functional testing?

Basic blood work may be billed through insurance depending on your plan and LabCorp coverage. However, advanced functional labs are not covered by insurance and are generally self-pay. Some specialty labs provide superbills for partial reimbursement.

Is this available via telemedicine?

Yes. All functional testing and personalized root-cause treatment plans can be completed through secure telemedicine.
